Herman the German…

This all began when I received a text message from my mom saying:

Baba, I just posted you something you could perhaps write about on your blog 🙂 p.s. Don’t kill him!!!”   [insert confused face!]

She gave me a few clues as to what on Earth this could’ve been: She said that his name is Herman, he didn’t smell nice, but tasted delicious and has travelled all over the world… Riiiight. Confused as a chameleon on a Smarties box, I proceeded to asking my mom if she was on crack?! The answer was of course a NO, but no one can blame me for asking any way 🙂

Herman arrived in his little box with a set of instructions that had to be followed for 10 days. This was the first time I had ever heard of this Herman, but we gave him a chance and we took him in to our loving kitchen. My mom was right about his smell though… not so great. The instructions I received were quite clear:

You cannot put me in the fridge or I will die. If I stop bubbling, I am dead.”

Huh?? What a responsibility I had ahead of me!! This was no doubt going to be a challenge…

“Herman the German” friendship cake is a sourdough cake recipe which is several decades old. Obviously the mix isn’t decades old, but you get the general  idea of the whole thing! It passes through circles of friends, family and maybe even strangers- similar to a chain letter. My portion of Herman arrived and I was reassured that he was not “dead” as he was still bubbling. Phew!! As instructed, I put him into a large mixing bowl and covered him with a tea towel.

So, we survived Day 1. High five to me!! On Day 2 and 3, all I had to do was stir him well. On Day 4, apparently he was hungry and craved 1 cup each of plain flour, sugar and milk. From Day 5 to 8, all he needed was mixing up and then on Day 9, he had the same hunger craving as before. Then it was time to play the “friendship” part and so I divided my Herman into two parts and gave the second half to my friend Lindsey 🙂 Then Day 10 arrived and Herman was very hungry! I added the necessary ingredients (minus the fruit) and chose to add Smarties and Milo too 🙂

I baked him for about an hour and TA-DA…. My perfect creation:

PSSSHHH!!! Yeah right… mine was more like this, well, actually… this is mine:

Hahahaha 🙂 well at least my Tom enjoyed it!!

I think…

If anyone wants the ingredients or instructions, drop me a line and I’ll be happy to send them! 🙂 xoxoxox
